Who said saving can’t be cool for youth and adults alike? Certainly not Leo Moneymaker (a.k.a Young Muny) and Alex Colucci (a.k.a Lil’ Savings), students of San Juan Hills High School, CA who scored first place in the Lights, Camera, Save! Contest sponsored by the American Bankers Association (ABA) Education Foundation. The two students rap about three simple steps to saving and the dangers of debt, ‘representin’ their ability to have frugal fun even though “[their] grills are made of foil and [their] chains are made of string.” The steps they outline are as follows:

  • Step 1: Write a list of what you really need to buy [needs are different from wants].
  • Step 2: Use cash for purchases instead of a credit card.
  • Step 3: If your debt is getting higher, pay it off “or it’ll burn you like fire.”

The song’s simple message: “before you start to dance and before you start to rave, just remember that to spend you have got to learn to save!” Check out more videos that tech-savvy teens have put together to encourage saving among their peers at the Teach Children to Save Program channel.
